Il grunge è un genere musicale che è derivato dall’hardcore e il punk rock. Il punk, movimento musicale nato alla fine degli anni 60, era portatore di una visione della vita distorta, priva di bellezza. Di conseguenza i punk si atteggiavano a individui che disprezzavano la società. Il loro abbigliamento era costituito da borchie, elementi in pelle, i capelli erano colorati, sporchi e tutto dava l’aspetto di un qualcosa di ripugnante. Nel grunge invece, scopriamo un diverso approccio alla società: a differenza del punk il grunge era permeato da un senso di apatia, non di violenza. L’apatia, l’atteggiamento nichilista, deriva quindi non più da una rabbia violenta (quasi fisica) verso le istituzioni, ma come forma di ribellione silenziosa che innervosiva sommessamente.
Ciò portava a scegliere un tipo di abbigliamento totalmente diverso da quello visto negli altri movimenti e mode passate, come i mods, punks, beatniks, tutte studiate fin nei minimi dettagli.
L’abbigliamento tipico grunge era quindi fatto di ciò che è sempre stato considerato insignificante e accostato con casualità: camicione di flanella, jeans sdruciti, anfibi e giacconi e maglioni tutti rigorosamente consunti. Il meccanismo era quello di voler dare un volto alla classe sociale operaia e dimostrare come non sia importante l’aspetto esteriore, ma la musica in se e per se.
Negli anni lo stile grunge si è evoluto scardinando così la sua vera identità e la sua filosofia: voleva sovvertire le regole del perbenismo degli anni ottanta, disobbedire alle regole dello star system e sfidare la buona educazione borghese.
Nel 1994, Marc Jacobs fu il designer che omaggiò lo stile grunge, facendo sfilare in passerella alla direzione di Perry Ellis, una collezione decretata come la sua fortuna.
Morto Perry Ellis, fu chiamato proprio Marc Jacobs per interpretare l’anima rock del brand. Così nel 1993 venne lanciata la collezione dedicata al grunge di Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis. Le top model come Naomi Campbell e Kate Moss sfilarono con maglioni, cappelli in lana, jeans sdruciti, come un omaggio.
Anche Saint Laurent SS16 fu ispirato dalle candeggiate chiome grunge, dai jeans slavati e dalle felpe slabbrate. Molti dei modelli della collezione indossavano anche occhiali da sole bianchi come Kurt Cobain.
Secondo la rivista Dazed Magazine il grunge sta vivendo una rinascita proprio perché associata al decennio a cui è collegato (Stansfield, T., 21 December 2015. Grunge and fashion
Grunge is a music label that is derived from hardcore and punk rock. Punk was born in the late ’60s, was the bearer of a distorted view of life, devoid of beauty. Their clothing consisted of studs, leather pieces, the hair was bleached, dirty and all gave the appearance of something repulsive. In grunge instead, we find a different approach to society: unlike the punk grunge was permeated by a sense of apathy, not of violence.
Apathy, the nihilistic attitude, so not derives more from a violent rage (almost physical) towards the institutions, but as a form of silent rebellion that unnerved softly.
This approach led to choose a type of clothes totally different from what we’ve seen in other movements and past fashions, such as mods, punks, beatniks, all designed to the smallest detail.
The typical grunge clothing was composed of what has always been considered insignificant and approached with randomness: flannel shirt, torn jeans, boots and completely worn out
jackets and sweaters. The mechanism was to put a face to the working class and to show how important it is not the outward appearance, but the music in all the sides.
Over the years, grunge style evolved thus dislodged his true identity and his philosophy: he wanted to subvert the rules of respectability eighties, disobey the star system rules and defy the good bourgeois education.
In 1994, Marc Jacobs was the only designer who tributed grunge style, doing a catwalk at the direction of Perry Ellis. This collection decreed as his fortune.
According to Nebahat Tokatli (2011), Marc Jacobs was the only fashion designer who recognized the influences of New York underground.4 Especially, Jacobs was the first designer to create a genre, a totally different kind of style, that derives from street, that embraces the real soul of the ground. With his designs, he recreated the real ‘sound of Seattle’, listened to young people and what they want to follow. In particular he said:
‘It was Sprouse who had come up with the idea of taking what young people were wearing at clubs and turning them into expensive fashion—a formula that Jacobs would successfully implement a few years later in 1992, a year after MTV introduced the sounds of Seattle ‘grunge rock’ to its viewers and Marc Jacobs saw a possibility in the growing popularity of the music genre.’(Tokatli, 2010)
Even Saint Laurent SS16 collection was inspired by grunge bleached hair, faded jeans and sweatshirts from chipped. Many of the models in the collection also wore white sunglasses as Kurt Cobain.
According to the magazine Dazed Magazine grunge is undergoing a renaissance because associated with the decade in which it is connected.
