“Success doesn’t suck” copertina Rolling Stone.

THE CRASH WITH SUCCESS
From province to fame (Nevermind). With the launch of Nevermind, the rock world was never be the same again.
The second Nirvana’s album Nevermind, was released on Geffen Records on September 24, 1991. It was ranked at position 17 of the list of 500 best albums according to Rolling Stone and in the third position in the ranking of the 100 best albums of all time compiled by British magazine Q. The song Smell Like Teen Spirit climbed to the top of the charts and also reached the sixth position Billboard Hot 100: it was dubbed “anthem for apathetic kids” of Generation X. MTV really wanted to send rolling the Nirvana’s single in television. The phenomenon became the biggest and all the kids of the ’90s began to adopt Nirvana’s style.
The cover of Nevermind sums up all the band’s thought. The photo was taken by photographer Kirk Weddle in a pool of Pasadena and shows a naked baby in the water who “chases” symbolically a dollar bill. The meaning, pretty obvious, is a provocation to the record companies and their heavy demand for money. Cobain’s ideas were not liked (and above all very expensive) so the group decided to put the dollar only at the end, only to provoke and insult subtly the recording industry.
“Success does not suck” cover of Rolling Stone. In 1992 in an interview with Rolling Stones, Nirvana spoke openly about their relationship with the media and the fame. The band, seemed on the verge of not being able to sustain their aversion to the media; now the phenomenon was recognizable and their reputation was become stellar. The success was inevitable and the album Nevermind was a door to a completely new music.
‘I still see stuff, descriptions of rock stars in some magazine – ‘Sting, the environmental guy,’ and ‘Kurt Cobain, the whiny, Complaining, neurotic, bitchy guy who hates everything, hates rock stardom, hates His Life.’ And I’ve never been happier in my life. Especially Within the last week, Because the shows sono stati going so well – except for tonight. I’m a much happier guy than a lot of people think I am. ‘10
In the interview, the band surrended to the fame and have begun to understand the real music industry. After that single, they become rich and become also teen’s idols.
Nirvana represented the perfect example of complete alienation from the “glittery world” of the star system. This brings us back to the Marxist philosophy, where the subject is alienated from his work, from society and from life itself (Storey, J., 2012. Cultural Theory and Popular Culture. An Introduction.. 6th Edition, London: Routledge. P. 59-61).
Alienation is the concept of estrangement from what you do not feel belong to; what Marx and Engels pointed out, is the relationship between the working class and work. It can be very helpful to this combination of Marxist philosophy and the thinking of the young people belonging to the grunge movement. What unites them is a sense of not belonging with the host society: the young workers as the ’90s, “produces” not for himself, but for what is outside of him, that is society. So all the work, the effort, the ideals, are no longer part of the individual.
The individualism we mentioned in the previous chapter, was created only for the upper classes, and that the average rich and middle class. Only after Cobain’s death we see how grunge music was able to return on its steps, abandoning compromises.
